Nelson Mandela taught the world that the dignity of men and women is the only foundation on which we can build a just society. He has shown us that peace is not an ideal or abstract topic, but a lifestyle; it is a way to interact with others and with the world.

November 2009, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 18, the birthday of Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of his services in promoting the culture of peace as Nelson Mandela World Day.
